Are affirmations crap?
I used to think affirmations were crap. A nice idea, but ultimately just that: a nice IDEA. Nothing truly useful. How could simple words said or heard over and over make a difference, and if it does, isn’t that brainwash? Isn’t that the opposite of truth?
I’ve come to realize that I welcome brainwash. I’ve been fed a lot of crap over the years and I’m about ready to be done with a lot of it. The more I study personal development and transformation, the more I realize that our brains are far from being a sacred and clean body of truth. They are clunky street cleaners, picking up every piece of trash and change that it passes. My brain is filled with knowledge, judgements, assessments, opinions and some determination of “normal”. Most of it came from others. Some of it has been created. I heard once that 95% of our thoughts are the same as the ones the day before. If this is true, then that means we have this 5% opportunity each day to create something new and with enough persistence, that 5% can start to replace the 95% repeated thought pattern.
Personally, I started to get interested in filling that 5% with as much quality as I can. If I’m going to be a picking up everything that I pass and make that a part of me, it seems obvious to start consciously selecting some of the input.
I do this a few ways each day: Visualization meditations, inspirational and positive thought provoking videos, creative dreaming and intention setting, and yep, you guessed it, the wonderful world of affirmations.
What I like about it, is that with a little persistence, those affirmations become the new eyes I see from. It’s like I’m designing my world, but of course the world isn’t changing. My worldview is. And as my worldview changes, so includes my view of myself, the people in my life, my goals, and therein lies new actions that formulate and fulfill my future.
Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, and many others offer audio and written affirmations to get you started. Over time, you’ll find that it’s effective to begin with other’s affirmations that are consistent with your values and the future you are intending to fulfill. Pretty soon, you may find yourself compelled to write your own affirmations.
Here are some affirmations I offer you. If they fit, use them.

What I’ve discovered is that it only works if you really get into it and love the process of it. Desperately needing to change your thoughts keeps your thoughts desperate rather than changing. Loving and creating the process, gives you love and creation! So it’s as much about the feeling behind the words you say as the actual words you say. So I invite you to give it a try! Share what you discover! What’s the worst that can happen? Too many loving thoughts? 😛
